MY BRAINCHILD TURNED ONE YEAR OLD! || (LATE) MAY WRAP-UP

Hullo, bookdragons!

May sapped all the energy from my body but it was my blogiversary (is this how you spell it? my two brain cells can’t think properly) month so it still had its bright patches. I actually don’t have a regular class now but I have to go to school for graduation practice which is straight up exhausting. I go home feeling like a very dead vegetable and then sleep without reading one word from the books I’m currently reading. WE’RE HALFWAY THROUGH THE YEAR AND I STILL HAVEN’T MADE A DENT ON MY TBR PILE. I’m definitely not panicking.

MAY 2019 WRAP-UP

Reading

As I’ve mentioned earlier, my reading progress isn’t really going on as smoothly as I planned. I’m trying not to feel too bad about it (truth: I feel so bad about it) but I really hope I can read more books in the following months. OH PLEASE LET ME READ MORE BOOKS I AM BEGGING ALL THE HEAVENS NOW.

Here are the books I read in May:

1. Romanov by Nadine Brandes (★★★☆☆)

9780785217244_18ead-296306100.jpg

Good enough Anastasia retelling but I thought the pacing was very dragging. It took so long for the story to build up and I didn’t feel any attachment to the characters. I still commend the descriptive writing and the world-building though. You can read my full review here.

2. ‎We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal (★★★★☆)

It didn’t quite live up to the hype but I still enjoyed it immensely. I loved the Arabian-inspired world but didn’t really connect with the characters that much. It started out very slowly (yes there were dragging parts too) but became more fast-paced as the story progressed (some events felt rushed to me unfortunately).

However, the ending was an absolute killer. Can’t wait for the next book. You can read my full review here.

3. ‎The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad (★★★★★)

9781338357165_70681-296306100.jpeg

This is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. THIS IS THE DIVERSE STANDALONE WE ALL DESERVE. The world-building is A+ and I loved Nafiza’s writing style. Oh and the romance subplot was soooo good. It hit me right in the feels about 4197645 times. This book also has strong female characters who can smash the patriarchy in a blink.

JUST READ THIS BOOK, OKAY? Will forever scream about this one. Full review coming soon.

4. ‎Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer (★★★.5)

heart-of-mist-chosen-996471929.jpg

Heart of Mist is a promising addition to the fantasy genre with its meticulous world-building, detailed writing, nuanced portrayal of societal issues, and remarkable characters. However, I also had issues with this book’s pacing. It was too dragging that I almost dozed off at some points. Still looking forward to the sequel though. Read my full review here.

Blogging

OOH HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY TO BOOKDRAGONISM!

I’ve been looking forward to this milestone and I can hardly believe I made it this far. Who would’ve thought that my procrastinating butt could survive one year in this blogging gig? I started this blog as an extra hobby but now it has become a part of my DNA. My first-born child will probably roar in dragonish and speak HTML codes someday. It’s not exactly a pretty image but I can adjust.

Anyway, I’ve said this a million times before but THANK YOU VERY MUCH. In my first year, I had 1k followers, 17k hits, and wrote more than a hundred blog posts.

I never would’ve achieved so much if not for y’all. Honestly, I’m struggling with blogging right now (hence the late posts and bouts of inactivity) but I’m trying to find my groove back for all of you. My dragon heart loves you so much.

In case you want to read them again, here are my posts from May (there are so few of them I want to weep):

I ALSO FAILED SPECTACULARLY AT BLOG HOPPING LAST MONTH. Natural selection will come for me now. ‘Twas nice meeting y’all.

Anyway, here are some blog posts I enjoyed reading in May:

Kal interviewed Liz Kerin who is the author of an upcoming fantasy book—The Phantom Forest. I’ve heard so many praises for this book and I can’t wait to read my ARC! This interview also made me connect with the book even though I haven’t read it yet.

Check out this list of diverse romances from bookathonblog! You can find many great book recommendations there.

Cait shared some YA anxiety book recommendations in her post. My favorite blogging queen is out here spreading snark and wisdom again. IT’S WORTH READING Y’ALL SO CHECK IT OUT.

• I also enjoyed reading Sophie’s post where she talked about books that made her cry. I loved her witty remarks and my own blog post even got a special mention. I love one (1) supportive blogger friend.

That’s it! I’m so glad to be a part of this community and thank you again for helping me in my first year on this platform. I hope you won’t get tired of screaming about books with me. I also hope y’all will still stick with me even though I’m in a huge creative slump right now. I’m really hoping to read and post more this month. WISH ME LUCK.

Have a great June, y’all!

  1. Congrats on your 1 year blogiversary!! That’s so cool!! (I have actually no idea when my anniversary would be … I’ve been doing if on off for some time …)

And I had a similar reaction to Nadine Brandes first book. Like the story and the writing was good, but I just couldn’t connect with the characters at all. And I’m soooo glad The Candle and the Flame was not disappointing! I’m so excited to read that book!

    1. THANK YOU! Maybe you can check the publication date of your first post and then celebrate your anniversary on that date? That’s what I did.

I HOPE YOU GET TO READ THE CANDLE AND THE FLAME TOO! It deserves more love and attention.

      1. That would be 2017 😀 but I didn’t post for like 1 1/2 years after that so it feels a little weird to call it my anniversary? I might just stay blogiversaryless ^^

Yes, I have that book on my wishlist! It just sounds so good!

  2. Happy blogversary!
Don’t feel bad about your reading slump, at least you have a good excuse! Can you believe I’ve barely read in May because I’m on a post-Endgame state of utter and total sadness? Every book I pick up just seems boring 🙊😬😳

    1. MARIA THANK YOU FOR BEING THERE FOR ME SINCE DAY ONE! No words can express just how thankful I am to you and my whole Hogwarts fam.

I can relate to the posr-endgame stress. I still have it now 😭

  3. happy blogversary again! graduation practice sounds terrible if it’s anything like mine was – they made us sit out in the sun so they could make literally every single person in my 300+ graduating class practice walking across the stage (and they made a huge deal of telling the girls to wear whatever shoes we planned on wearing to graduation since apparently a lot of people wore heels … my friends and I said screw that and wore Converse as usual, to both practice and the actual graduation 😜) anyWAY hang in there graduation practice means you’re so close to actually graduating and that’s super exciting!!!

I know it’s super unhelpful to say “don’t stress about your TBR” so I’ll just wish you good reading (and blogging) months coming up 🍀

    my last final exam was may 13th so I’ve been on summer vacation since then and done a decent amount of reading, though it feels like it’s never enough with all the ARCs and upcoming releases and backlist books I haven’t read yet there is no end there will never be an end asf;ljasl;fjadlksd;jweafjo;

but for real, when I feel a creative slump coming on or already here I like to do other creative things (so for me, that might be piano, doing more artsy bullet journal spreads, photography, baking) and spend time with friends … my friends and I sometimes have the most random conversations which is where I sometimes get inspiration! also in my dreams and in the shower, but some of those ideas are more usable than others 🤔

    1. I JUST GRADUATED LAST WEEK AND I’M FEELING SO HAPPY AND FREE!

And oh my that graduation story is gold. Don’t let ANYTHING stop you from wearing converse. It’s the best of them all. I agree with the shower tip when having a slump. I always get the best ideas when I’m taking a bath. The creative serum must be in the water.

THANKS FOR ALL THE SUPPORT! (this reply is soo late I’m sorry)

  4. Happy blog anniversary!

Hope June is a good month for you!

I read 5 books in May – Heart Of Mist was one of them, and I can safely say the sequels pick up in pace A LOT so I think (hope?) you will enjoy them as much as I did!

  6. Yay!!! One year blogging is amazing and well done for all your achievements!! So exciting 🎉🎉
I know I feel bad about not reading as much as I could– it’s a struggle!! But I try not to feel bad (it doesn’t always work though) 😂
I have We Hunt The Flame to read and I am excited to see the world. I heard it had a slower start but I am curious to see what the ending is.
Ahh.. I will need to read The Candle and The Flame ASAP!!
I hope you get back into blogging– it can be a struggle at times but I hope you don’t feel too much pressure. You blog when you want to blog!! 💛
Ahh… thank you so much for sharing my post– that’s so sweet 😭❤ I’m so glad you enjoyed it!!
I can’t wait for you to scream about more amazing books!!
I hope you have a great rest of June and sometimes I think the best thing to do when having a creative slump is to have a break but sometimes it’s hard to take a break when you want to be creative so it’s a horrible place to be. Best of luck– I’m sending you lots of chocolates to help. *chocolate always helps 😂*

  7. Thank you so much for linking to my interview with Liz, and I am so glad it has you even more excited to read the book! I was able to read it a couple of weeks ago and LOVED IT; I honestly cannot wait until it is out in the world and everyone else can fall in love with Haben.

Don’t feel bad about your blogging inconsistency! You had a good amount of posts last month AND you had some good reading. I think that is a win in my book! TBRs will never be conquered, just succumb to that knowledge. lol.
