RECOMMENDING BOOKS BY ASIAN AUTHORS BASED ON BOOKS YOU PROBABLY LOVE

Hullo, bookdragons!

It’s been a while since I wrote a recommendations post so I thought, “ooh maybe you should get off twitter and do something useful for once” and that’s how this post came to be. Actually, this has been on the back of my brain for months but I didn’t really get the chance to write it because a) it was difficult to choose the books to include in this post, b) I had more urgent blog posts to publish, and c) Twitter exists.

In this post, I’m going to recommend books by Asian authors based on hyped books you probably love. Just think of this post as a tribute to some of my favorite unapologetically Asian books. At this point I’m just snatching all the chances I can get to promote my faves and no one can stop me 😌

If you think that I’m here to compare these two books, you’re sorely mistaken. Six of Crows and The Gilded Wolves are both phenomenal and I think it’s time that we stop pitting these bookish royalties against each other. TGW has a different premise from SoC but I’m certain that fans of the beloved duology will appreciate Roshani Chokshi’s spectacular historical fantasy. It also has a heist subplot, diverse cast of characters (would die for them all in a heartbeat), and witty dialogues that will make you laugh out loud.

Descendant of the Crane is already dubbed as the Chinese Game of Thrones so it’s no surprise that it’s on this list. DOTC offers a complex storyline filled with political intrigue and mystery that will certainly appeal to fans of George R. R. Martin’s epic fantasy series. The female protagonist also has a lot of fire in her heart like Daenerys. If you’re looking for a book that will fill the void after THAT mistake of a season (I’m still angry about GoT season 8 and now I’m just going to pretend that it doesn’t exist), I highly recommend you read Descendant of the Crane.

Dragon Pearl is a middle-grade science fiction standalone inspired from Korean mythology that filled me with Illuminae nostalgia. Both books are thrilling space operas that kept me at the edge of my seat. Like Illuminae, Dragon Pearl also gives importance to friendship which I greatly appreciate. It also has epic spaceship chases, dragons, goblins, and shape-shifting foxes. Basically, it has Illuminae vibes plus a supernatural cast. IT’S WORTH THE READ. Let’s support Rick Riordan Presents yes!

I have to admit that I am in need of a COBAB reread because I hardly remember anything except pure fantasy goodness and a great hate for Inan. The important thing is that I’m sure it was one of my best reads of last year. I can relate We Hunt the Flame to COBAB because they’re both epic and the protagonists are on their way on an adventure to bring back magic to their lands ft. brooding princes that are out for their blood. They’re the kind of books that will hold you in its grasp until the last page. Oh and both of them have killer endings. WHERE ARE THE SEQUELS I NEED THEM NOW I’M ON MY KNEES.

Yes yes, I know I have no right to include The Hunger Games on any of my posts because I haven’t read it yet but I’ve seen the movies which is a lame excuse but please forgive me Empress of All Seasons is an absolute favorite and it deserves a space here. It definitely has that survival of the fittest Hunger Games vibe going on as girls from all around this Japanese-inspired world undergo deadly challenges to become the next Empress. It’s important to note that this book has killer seasonal rooms that are filled with danger and blood. It’s an action-filled page-turner that y’all should check out.

Surprise! I actually read books that aren’t fantasy or sci-fi thank you very much. Two of my favorites from the contemporary genre are The Hate U Give and Patron Saints of Nothing. They’re starkly different from each other but both explore themes of grief, family, and speaking up for what is right. Kudos to them for stabbing my heart in the same fashion. I gladly offered up my tears for these masterpieces and maybe you should too.

tell me your thoughts2-1

Can you give me more recommendations based on more popular books you love? Have you read any books on this list?

  2. Is it bad that I own most of the books by Asian authors you’ve recommended, but I haven’t started them yet? Well, I did read Descendent of the Crane (and it is amazing!!!), but the others.. they’re going to the top of my tbr now!

    1. No it’s not bad! I suck at decreasing my TBR too. What’s important is that you’ve bumped them at the top of your TBR. Best decision ever. Glad you loved DOTC!

  3. This post was sooooo good.. but also a call-out because all of the books you recommended are on my TBR, but I haven’t read them yet. but in my defense, I am currently reading DOTC and *loving* it! You also make me sound so hyped for COBAB and WHTF! sometimes i hate brooding princes, but sometimes i’m in the mood to stan trash characters lmao

I’m glad you’re loving DOTC! Hope you get to COBAB and WHTF soon. They have more than enough of that brooding prince content.

  4. YES YES YES THANK YOU FOR THIS LIST. I agree 100% that The Gilded Wolves gives off huge Six of Crows vibes (although I enjoyed the latter a bit more). I’m also reading Descendant of the Crane right now and it’s great! The politics is lovely and I’m liking the heroine more and more as I go on. I MUST read Patron Saints of Nothing, since it’s set in my country and deals with a very prominent issue going on here. Thanks so much for putting this list together! 🤗

  5. I loved this post– I really want to read The Gilded Wolves– it’s sounds so good and I’m excited for the characters and a heist. I haven’t read about a heist in ages!! My local bookstore didn’t have it unfortunately but I will still get my hands on it!!

I just finished Descendant of the Crane and I really enjoyed it and you’re right Hesina does have a fiery spirit which I loved. Also I am with you on denying that season 8 of GoT happened!! 😂😂

So many great books!! This is a great post!!! I need all the books immediately!! 😍

    1. I’m so glad you loved this post! Oh and I wish you can snag a copy of TGW soon. And yes I love Hesina so much. By the way, I’m still mad about that last season and I’m just trying to wipe it off my memory. Hope it works soon.

        She was great!! 😍
Yes I was disappointed with it– I hope you succeed in trying to wipe it from your memory. I’m just trying to focus on Pod as his was the only character arc that ended how I wanted 😂😂

  12. aw Rain this is such a fantastic post idea! imo there can never be enough Asian-authored recs – I’ve read or TBR’d the ones on this list so I’ll add Ignite the Stars & Eclipse the Skies by Maura Milan (though I can’t think of a good comp rn, maybe The Disasters or Wayfarers trilogy?), Picture Us in the Light (again, no specific comp comes to mind, but kind of a Nina LaCour vibe), It’s Not Like It’s a Secret (contemporary F/F YA with some tackling of social issues, so I guess I’d compare it to Simon vs.?) … wow I’m really not good at comp titles, maybe I’ll just leave it to others like you in future 😅

  13. I have majority of these on my TBR…even the non Asian author ones. That list just keeps growing out of control. It’s a couple on here I didn’t have though, so thank you for the recs!

  20. rain, thank you so much for sharing! you just remembered me of the huge list of rick riordan presents books i haven’t got around to yet. dragon pearl and aru shah and the end of time are at the top of my list and are also by asian authors, so i really should get to them already. i am really excited about patron saints of nothing as well; i’ll probably be listening to the audiobook for this one but it does sound as heartbreaking and powerful as the hate u give.
once again, thanks for all the recommendations! 💞

  21. This is such a cool post!!! I had no idea that Empress of All Seasons was similar to THG, but that makes me really hyped to read it?? (I’ve had a drc for… a while now and I NEED to read it aghaaghah) It makes me really happy to hear that THUG and Patron Saints of Nothing have really similar themes?? I just love books that align, and I need to read both of those lolol.

  22. This is such a brilliant post. I have a post idea but it’s only a list of the books I will read for YARC and all the books you mentioned are in my list. And I totally agree that SoC and tGW are both phenominal but each has their own charm. SoC is one of my all-time favorite books and I also highly recommend The Gilded Wolves. I really like Roshani’s writing style. It’s like reading poetry for me.
